Most newer cars (2001+) can do evetything through the 16 pin obc using a k+dcan usb cable. Older cars depend on years/model but many older cars use a variety of pinouts at the 20pin obc under the hood for more advanced things.

You'll want a 20 pin to obc adapter and k+dcan USB adapter with an ftdi chipset (google) for older than 2001 model years. Software

Search eBay for 'bmw 20-pin'. Just saw one for $1 with free shipping. FWIW: If you just want to change things like dealer options and reset service intervals, I recommend 'P.A. 'BMW Scanner 1.4'. It is much simpler and safer than INPA.

It also uses a Windows computer and it can be found on eBay for a very reasonable price. Here's a tutorial: P.A. Soft has a 16-pin connector but it is also compatible with the 20-pin adapter I described above. It worked fine in my 2003 525iT, which only has the 16-pin OBDII but I had to jump pins 7 and 8 to use it with the 20-pin adapter on the 528iT, here's more info on that mod.
