Civilization V Exe 0xc0000142 Dll

These are the symptoms of this specific problem: • After you install the game and click 'Play' in Steam — the CivV launcher shows up. No matter which version(DX9 or DX10/DX11) you choose — nothing at all happens after you make a choice and the launcher closes. The game is not running in the Task Manager's processes tab. • When you try to launch the game bypassing Steam and the launcher by running the CivilizationV.exe or CivilizationV_DX11.exe directly from the installation folder — you get a 0x000007b error code (which means that the program can't even start due to dependency issues). • If the game wasn't installed before or if you intentionally purged/moved the settings folder — the settings folder isn't even getting created in My Documents My Games where it should get created when you try to launch the game.

If you are having all of these symptoms then this solution is aimed at helping to fix your problem. If only one or two of these symptoms resemble yours and only vaguely at that or you were too lazy to check — please keep your crap out of this thread.

I am not responsible for you not being able to follow instructions or your lack of basic computer knowledge. There are other workarounds and diagnosis techniques but I found this solution to be the most reliable and stable.

In any case it is possible that this solution might not work for you or only fix a part of the problem if you have any other problems on your PC. I was searching all the forums for a true cause of this problem high and low but only found tons of people with this problem and no real explanation or solution. After 2 days of checking, fixing and reinstalling everything that might've caused this problem I found a solution that worked for me and I very sincerely hope it will work for you and make you happy. That's why I am sharing this.

The solution itself: • Download a fresh copy of Microsoft's DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer by going to • Delete or move to a different folder the corrupted files on your computer at C: Windows System32 D3DX9_42.dll and also C: Windows SysWOW64 D3DX9_42.dll too if you have it. • Run the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer you downloaded from Microsoft. I advice to access these folders by copy-pasting the paths specified into the start menu and hitting ENTER. They are hidden and protected by Windows as system-critical directories so they can appear non-present in the C: Windows folder even if they are present and you have the option to show the hidden files turned on.

• C: Windows System32 • C: Windows SysWOW64 Yeah, it's that easy. The web installer will check for all the DirectX files your computer is missing and download them for you as well as put them in the right folders.

In case your dxsetup is damaged and the DirectX Web Installer spews errors at you — try the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) which should fix your dxsetup allowing you to run the Web Installer without errors. You might ask 'If the problem is with DX9, why isn't DX10/11 version working?'

Because DX10/11 is a fraud and it always was one. Don't be fooled. If this solution worked for you — please leave a friendly answer in this thread so that other people can find it. God knows I don't sound too friendly myself, being increasingly peeved with the current state of industrial and domestic IT.

If you are sure that you are having the symptoms I stated and this solution didn't work for you — let me know, I would like to help you diagnose your problem. You can answer here but probably the faster way would be to add me as a friend and message me. Also to hell with Microsoft. Hi Erquint, I have recently encountered this issue myself. Few months ago I used to play Civ5 quite a lot without any problems but a day or two ago for no apparent reason, when I wanted to play it again it failed to start through steam (the first symptom you describe). So I tried running it directly via.exe files but all tries ended up with 0x000007b error (the second symptom).

I tried googling the solution but you are precise, there are many people with this problem but I didn't find any solution that would help my case. I tried quite lot of suggested solutions but none of them worked (including yours). I do not have SysWOW64 folder in my windows directory so I tried removing all D3DX9_* files from System32 and later also all D3DX11 files but neither that did help. Basically the only major changes to my PC since the time when I was able to run Civ5 were win7 updates and graphical card drivers updates. Do you think you could help me solve this issue?
